Top Tips to Enjoy Eating Out the GI Way

It is becoming more and more easy to eat out the GI way, with today's restaurants tending towards healthier ways of cooking and the use of healthier ingredients to cook with. Here are 8 top tips to make sure you make the most of your meal out:

1. To take the edge off your appetite, eat a small bowl of high-fibre cereal with skimmed milk. This will take the edge off your hunger, and also add some fibre to your stomach to reduce the GI of your meal.

2. Try drinking a glass of water before your meal. This will fill you up.

3. Ignore the bread basket

4. For your starter you should go for a soup or a salad. If you're choosing a soup go for one that is chunky, preferably vegetable or bean based. If you're going for a salad ask for the dressing on the side, as restaurants have a tendency to smother salads with too much high-fat dressing. This goes for your main course as well, where you should ask for any sauces to be put on the side.

5. If you can't get new potatoes, then ask the restaurant for 2 other vegetables instead.

6. Fish is usually an excellent choice. If you're going for poultry or other meat then make sure it's a low fat cut and that the skin can be removed.

7. For dessert you should either avoid it or go for fresh fruit. If you do have to have a dessert then make sure you share it.

8. Make sure you order decaffeinated coffee after.
