Java devices uses old networking technology wich is much easier to crack down than newer technologies. Using newer networking technologies makes data traffic and payment transactions safer against hack attacks and data breaches, but uses more hardware power.
Althogh there's Java devices with 3G and 4G, most Java devices are 2G and many of J2ME online games were european or american servers that time, wich are regions that have descontinued 2G - That's why only online games from Asia have survived for more time.
Java ME MIDP 3.0 was released but never implemented in any new devices, being MIDP 2.1 the last version. This marked the death of J2ME. Also, since the popularization of 3G people have been comming to smartphones with Android, Symbian, Windows phone and IOS, as MIDP 2.1 didn't had the same technologies present in these platforms, the game industry were descontinuing Java ME applications and developing application to these new technologies since then. No new MIDP generation were released since 2009, making Java ME to become a platform for IoT and Blu-ray devices only (Java ME 8).

I am for continue support to older technologies like J2ME, because it's part of media democratization and Dedomil community itself proves that. But the industry always follow the lastest technologies to stay in the market paths and don't care if there's still people that are stuck in older technologies.
