Every Java phone is atleast 2G, and can be 3G or rarely 4G (European Nokia 3310 versions, for example) aswell.
1G were a analog phone signal and was used only for voice calls, and could not be used to access internet or send/receive SMS. It was used in the oldest, giant, blocky phones, wich could not enter your pocket. This signal was descontinued since the popularization of the 2G as 1G could not handle so many users and caused a lot of interference
The SMS and internet capability was received in 2G with the digital mobile signal beggining. And optimized WEB was officially received in 3G
There's also technology differences between generations itself
Eze jeremiah's phone is a Nokia 6280, wich has the lastest 2G GSM technology and is 3G UMTS capable
